Vaping Marijuana: Is It Safer Than Smoking?
E-cigarettes, vapes, vape or hookah pens, vaporizers, e-pipes, vape watches, and other electronic nicotine delivery products are electronic, battery-powered devices that heat a liquid and allow users to inhale the aerosolized liquid, also known as e-liquid or e-juice. Some look like a regular cigarette, but many resemble everyday products like pens, USB drives, highlighting markers, or colorful toy-like items. E-cigarettes are not safe for youth, young adults, and pregnant women, and can be dangerous for adults who use tobacco products. Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are devices that use a heating element to turn flavored liquids into an aerosol that the user inhales. Most of these devices are used to deliver nicotine to the user, which is why another name for them are ENDS (electronic nicotine delivery systems). E-cigarette devices come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and styles.
In recognition of these and other risks related to e-cigarettes, the U.S. surgeon general issued an advisory on e-cigarette use among youth, urging parents, teachers, health professionals and states to take action to stop the epidemic among youth. The CDC has recommended that those who use e-cigarettes consider quitting and that children and women who are pregnant should not use e-cigarettes. For those who use e-cigarettes and experience similar symptoms CDC recommends seeking prompt medical care. It is important to note that the CDC has not conclusively determined the cause of the EVALI illnesses and researchers are not sure what combination of short-term, long-term or repeated exposure may contribute to lung injury. The recent outbreak of vaping related lung injuries also supports caution with respect to e-cigarettes.
If a person has been severely affected, they may have ongoing seizures or respiratory failure or other problems because of the damage done from low oxygen levels during the nicotine overdose event. Increased levels of nicotine or cotinine (nicotine metabolite) can be detected in urine or blood. There’s been one case report where two brothers smoked 17 and 18 pipes of tobacco in a row and were fatally poisoned. Nicotine poisoning refers to the toxic effects of consuming nicotine.
In this line, the maximum concentration tested (1000 µM) would correspond to approximately 80 to 150 ppm, which is far higher than the levels found in aerosols of some of these compounds [84]. Moreover, on a day-to-day basis, lungs of e-cigarette users are not constantly exposed to these chemicals for 24 h at these concentrations. Similar limitations were found when five of seven flavourings were found to cause cytotoxicity in human bronchial epithelial cells [87]. On March 27, 2021, Congress amended the Preventing All Cigarette Trafficking (PACT Act) to include new regulations regarding the delivery and sales of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), which include e-cigarettes, “vapes”, flavored and smokeless tobacco. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) go by many names, including but not limited to electronic nicotine delivery systems, vapes, vape pens, e-cigars, and hookah pens.
The Aegis Solo Kit featured IP67 ingress protection, allowing it to withstand drops, particles and water damage. According to Cleveland Clinic, one type of Juul pod contains 0.7mL (or 59 mg/mL) of nicotine per pod, which is approximately equivalent to 200 puffs of a cigarette. Juul’s maker has claimed that it delivers nicotine up to 2.7 times faster than other e-cigarettes, according to Truth Initiative.
The difference in opinion worldwide may be due to different restrictions imposed. For example, while no more than 20 ng/mL of nicotine is allowed in the EU, e-liquids with 59 mg/dL are currently available in the United States. Nevertheless, despite the national restrictions, users can easily access foreign or even counterfeit products online. Electronic nicotine dispensing systems (ENDS), commonly known as electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes, have been popularly considered a less harmful alternative to conventional cigarette smoking since they first appeared on the market more than a decade ago. E-cigarettes are electronic devices, essentially consisting of a cartridge, filled with an e-liquid, a heating element/atomiser necessary to heat the e-liquid to create a vapour that can be inhaled through a mouthpiece, and a rechargeable battery (Fig. 1) [1, 2]. Both the electronic devices and the different e-liquids are easily available in shops or online stores.
Nearly half a million Americans are dying from its effects each year. Beginning in 2019, several U.S. states implemented temporary or permanent bans on the sale of flavored e-cigarettes. THC, synthetic cannabinoids, and dextromethorphan, a drug found in some cough medicines, “were identified in e-liquids purportedly containing only CBD to be consumed for ‘health benefits,’” the researchers said. Some of these additives have health risks, such as diacetyl, which has a buttery taste. Diacetyl has been found to cause a severe lung disease similar to bronchiolitis.
More than half (57.8%) of those who had used e-cigarettes in the past month found it inconvenient to dispose of e-cigarette waste responsibly. Many young e-cigarette users reported throwing away, improperly recycling, or littering the devices. Only 15% of young e-cigarette users reported disposing of empty pods or disposable vapes by dropping them off or sending them for electronic recycling. Vaping, still at epidemic levels among youth with about one in five high school students using e-cigarettes in 2020, generates a significant amount of toxic and plastic waste.
Of those other flavored cartridges, fruit-flavored cartridges were the most popular, with sales increasing 600% from 4.7% of all cartridges sold in 2015 to 29.7% in 2018. Similar increases were seen in the sale of candy and dessert-flavored cartridges, as well as the sale of disposable e-cigarettes with these flavors. Vaping also reduces the amount of drug that is destroyed or changed into something else via the combustion process found in traditional smoking. The publication of their results closely follows publication of a trial of cytisinicline for e-cigarette cessation.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, a group of health experts that makes recommendations about preventive health care, has concluded that evidence is insufficient to recommend e-cigarettes for smoking cessation in adults, including pregnant women. Participants were first recruited in May 2021, and data analysis was conducted in December 2022. But it is not responsible for the harmful effects of smoking, and nicotine does not cause cancer. People have safely used nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to stop smoking for many years. Nicotine replacement therapy is prescribed by doctors or is available from pharmacies. They usually contain nicotine, which is the addictive chemical in cigarettes.
Toll said he has patients who describe keeping their e-cigarettes under their pillows so they can vape right before going to sleep and then again immediately upon waking in the morning. People who smoke cigarettes have to get a cigarette from the pack and light it. There are also natural stopping points – when the cigarette is finished, it must be snuffed out, and when the pack is used up, it must be thrown away and a new one purchased and opened before the person can smoke again.
We strive to follow Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and use Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA) specifications. Interestingly, in these experiments nfECVC produced a greater inhibitory effect than ECVC on phagocytosis. We have confirmed that vaping exaggerates the cytotoxic effects of ECL, inducing both cellular apoptosis and necrosis. These effects were seen when AMs were treated with both ECVC and nfECVC, suggesting both nicotine dependent and independent mechanisms.
No use of any of the study products was recorded in the varenicline and NRT arms after the initial 3 months. Ratings of helpfulness of the products in assisting participants in stopping smoking mirrored the efficacy outcomes, with NRT rated as less helpful than ECs and varenicline ijoy sd mode 10000, and EC and varenicline rated as similarly helpful (eTable 5 in Supplement 2). Participants in all 3 study arms were invited to join a self-help forum set up for the trial participants on WeChat, a messaging app. This was to share their experience with stopping smoking and provide mutual support via text messages.
These liquid pods also contain some of the same toxic chemicals found in smoke from traditional cigarettes, which is, in a word, poison. When tested, aldehydes, traces of metal, and other carcinogens responsible for playing a role in lung and oral cancers were present. While some adult users may have successfully quit smoking and attribute it to “vaping,” the fact remains that e-cigarettes contain nicotine, a highly addictive, dangerous substance.
Researchers from Yale Cancer Center and MUSC Hollings Cancer Center published the results of their clinical trial of varenicline to help adults to stop using e-cigarettes in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine on May 16. The first U.S. trial of varenicline for e-cigarette cessation shows promising results and warrants larger-scale trials, the researchers say. Currently, over 80% of schools in Iowa have a comprehensive tobacco and nicotine-free policy. To view or search for local policies, search Tobacco Use Prevention and Control’s Policy Database. In addition, PG with nicotine caused increased macrophage and CD4+/CD8+ T-lymphocytes cell counts in BALF compared to air control ijoy vape disposable, but these effects were ameliorated when animals were sub-chronically exposed to PG alone [42]. Urgent action is needed to control e-cigarettes to protect children, as well as non-smokers and minimize health harms to the population. E-cigarettes as consumer products are not shown to be effective for quitting tobacco use at the population level. Instead, alarming evidence has emerged on adverse population health effects. E-cigarettes (often called vape pens) are battery-operated vaping devices that heat a liquid until it becomes an aerosol (mist), which is inhaled. It usually contains nicotine, other harmful chemicals, and flavorings.
The inhalation of harmful chemicals can cause irreversible lung damage and lung diseases. This study examined the impact on adult e-cigarette users from the recent e-cigarette-only flavor bans in Washington State, New Jersey, and New York. We found that most respondents continued to use e-cigarettes with banned flavors post-ban and obtain banned-flavor e-cigarettes through legal channels. Enforcing compliance of retailers to the policy is crucial to control e-cigarette use. First, we depicted the characteristics of respondents from the three states with chi-square tests to evaluate demographic differences by state and the distribution of respondents by their tobacco and nicotine use status.
Nicotine exposure during this vital time can affect brain development in subtle and important ways. Their brains are still developing and forming the structure and connections necessary for the mature behavior of adulthood. Research published in 2017 found that the high temperatures needed to form the mist for vaping can create dozens of toxic chemicals, such as formaldehyde, which is thought to cause cancer. There are currently 78 licensed tobacco retailers in unincorporated Sonoma County, representing 23 percent of the total tobacco retailers throughout the county including cities. We’d love to hear eyewitnessaccounts, the history behind an article. “Vaping devices account for 70 tons of waste in Sonoma County’s landfill. Removing these non-recyclable toxic devices will help to eliminate hazardous waste,” Sonoma Supervisor Susan Gorin said.
The “vapor” inhaled also can cause inflammations in the mouth, eventually leading to gum disease. Additionally, “vaping” has been proven to destroy the mitochondria used in wound healing. Over time, inhaling the particles present in the “vapor” can cause what has become the well-known “smoker’s cough.” Smoking is the leading cause of death and disease in the United States and according to the FDA, teen electronic cigarette use has skyrocketed by nearly 80 percent in the past year.
At baseline, demographic and smoking history variables were collected, including age, sex, ethnicity, education lost vape ursa nano pro, marital status, income, health status, age of starting to smoke, cigarettes smoked per day, and previous cessation attempts. These aerosols can contain potentially harmful substances — including nicotine, formaldehyde and metals — some of which cause cancer and other harmful health effects.
E-cigarettes have been strongly linked to continued tobacco use and are not recommended for young people. Vaping can cause eye, throat, and nose irritation, as well as irritation in the respiratory tract. The nicotine in e-cigarettes can cause dizziness and nausea, especially in new users. E-cigarettes contain many of the same toxins as regular cigarettes, but they may have smaller amounts. Some brands also have much less nicotine than regular cigarettes or no nicotine at all.
E-cigarettes do not contain tobacco, which is the harmful part of cigarettes that causes cancer. The 2024 E-Cigarette Summit marks 60 years since the publication of U.S Surgeon General Luther Terry’s landmark report on smoking and health – a consensus document that unequivocally established the link between smoking and serious disease. Viewed as the catalyst for the modern-day tobacco control movement, the 1964 report remains a historic example of the importance of science-led public health action. E-cigarettes come in many shapes and sizes and can look like USB flash drives, pens, and other everyday items.

The Preventing Online Sales of E-Cigarettes to Children Act was created in 2019 to reduce children and teens access to online sales of smokeless tobacco products. According to a 2020 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 85% of high school students and 74% of middle school students who used tobacco products in the past 30 days reported using a flavored tobacco product during that time. CDC also identified that most of the student users were influenced by mass media and their peers to use ENDS related products which often resulted in health issues such as delayed brain development, lung damage and the possibility of future addiction to other drugs. While the percent of young people in Massachusetts using traditional combustible cigarettes has fallen, there has been an exponential increase in the percent of young people using e-cigarettes and vaping devices. In 2019, 4.3% of Massachusetts high school students reported current use of combustible cigarettes and 32% reported current use of electronic cigarettes.

At times, the blood and urine samples of vapers rival even those of cigarette smokers. “If there was good evidence that people were using e-cigarettes just to quit smoking, there would be wide support,” Benowitz says. “The problem is most of the e-cigarette use in the U.S. is dual use with cigarettes.” People use e-cigs in places or situations where they can’t smoke, like in a restaurant, but continue lighting up when they can, he explains. E-cigarettes aren’t thought of as 100% safe, but most experts think they’re less dangerous than cigarettes, says Neal Benowitz, MD, a nicotine researcher at the University of California at San Francisco.
But it’s undeniable that they have less conventional carcinogens compared to oral tobacco products, like chewing tobacco and whatnot. About ORCA-V1The Phase 2 ORCA-V1 trial evaluated 160 adults who used e-cigarettes on a daily basis at five clinical trial locations in the United States. ORCA-V1 participants were randomized to receive 3mg cytisinicline three times daily or placebo for 12 weeks in combination with standard cessation behavioral support. The dose and administration of cytisinicline in the ORCA-V1 study is identical to that used in the Phase 3 registrational trials for smoking cessation. ORCA-V1 was supported in part by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) of the NIH through grant funding which was awarded in two phases totaling $2.8 million. “A proliferation of establishments selling electronic smoking devices or electronic smoking device paraphernalia, particularly when concentrated geographically, can have a negative impact on public health, safety and welfare,” the moratorium said.
Federal regulators have targeted flavored vape liquids to rein in underage sales and use. Early results from a national survey of teen tobacco and e-cig use show vaping among teens continued to rise well into 2019. Although evidence is lacking, e-cigarettes for inhalation of nicotine may be beneficial in reducing adverse health effects related to the use of combustible tobacco products. However, e-cigarettes are not FDA approved as a smoking cessation tool and the amount of nicotine and other substances a person inhales from each nicotine cartridge remains unclear. When FDA “deemed” e-cigarettes as part of its jurisdiction in 2016, it gave e-cigarettes that were currently on the market two years to prepare premarket applications (known as PMTAs). These applications are what FDA uses to to determine whether new tobacco products are “appropriate for the protection of public health” before they are allowed on the market.
Since we stopped our attempted online purchases with placing items in an electronic shopping cart, this precluded our ability to examine whether age would have been verified at delivery and to calculate the actual purchase rate. However, only four websites in our study stated that age verification would actually occur at delivery.
